Getting involved in your local section is one of the most rewarding aspects of American Society for Quality membership. ASQ Section 1406 functions solely on the volunteer time of its professional members. Therefore, any time that a section member can spare on a monthly basis is a valuable commodity for the vitality of the section. Whether it is 1 hour or 1 day, an opportunity exists for your volunteer time.
Why Volunteer?
- Make Connections -These can be new personal friendships and/or professional contacts. Smart, dynamic and engaging people are always fun and beneficial to meet. ASQ is overflowing with them.
- To Be on the Inside – The casual environment of ASQ membership lends itself to exchanges of information on potential job opportunities, trends in the local economy or specific industries, new projects on the horizon, as well as news and events in your particular field.
- For a Sense of Personal Achievement – Successes around work, family and even hobbies can be rewarding; but sometimes those successes carry with them a sense of obligation. Success in volunteering, however, tends to be a more pure reward because you’re expressing yourself and exercising your talents of your own free will.
- For the Commitment to Quality – Quality professionals may come to the field in any number of ways; but they tend to remain in this field because they have a passion for doing things exceedingly well. Volunteering with ASQ provides a forum for that shared passion as well as some support when you feel like you’re the only one at your company who has it.
- To Enhance One’s Leadership Skills – Enhancing one’s leadership skills should be part of everyone’s personal growth and development plan. Volunteering is the perfect venue for this because success rests on persuasion, conflict resolution, seeking win-win solutions and identifying highly valuable talents in less than obvious sources. Often in our personal and professional lives we rely on specific, formal authority to get things done; such as, “I’m the customer and the customer is always right”, “Because I’m the parent and I said so” or “Because I’m the boss and you report to me”. These are shortcuts to action and typically don’t achieve lasting results of the highest value. Volunteer organizations, on the other hand, are typically composed of peers who won’t respond well to dictates. They will, however, be eager to work toward a common goal under the guidance of a motivated, innovative leader with whom they share mutual respect. Those are skills that can be transferred to just about any setting.
